1. Wood Stove
If you are missing camping equipment or your stove broke, this is a super quick and easy fix!
· Step 1: use a knife or can opener to remove the top of the can
· Step 2: cut a 2”x2” whole at the bottom of the can, two vertical cuts from the bottom up and one across the top to connect, leaving the bottom attached. Pull the flap of metal downward, creating a tray – like piece to hold the kindling stable.
· Step 3: Prep little pieces of kindling and feed the can from the bottom square. The flames will rise and heat up any pot or pan set on top. Alternatively, if you have a tea candle on hand you could use that instead of kindling, however it doesn't burn as hot.
If you are putting something heavy on top, I suggest stabilizing with something a bit heavier around the can, such as small rocks. Always prep a lot of kindling, small sticks burn quick!

2. Bowl or plate
If you are missing plates or simply want to cut down on gear you’re bringing, Soda or beer cans are great to use as bowls or plates! Simply cut a rectangle piece out of an empty can and remove carefully so not to cut yourself. The throw your dinner in there and start scooping! You can even make a spoon out of the extra piece of tin if need be. I’ve done this quite a few times (especially with Kraft Dinner) and it works great!
3. Wind shield
Sometimes with camping stoves on a windy day, it can really affect fuel consumption and effect boiling time. If you have a Can or bottle, remove the top and bottom with a knife or can opener and make one simple vertical cut from top to bottom, spread it open and it can work great to protect your stove from the wind!

4. Mirror or signal
In case of emergency a mirror signal is always handy to have to flash from a distance for aid. A beer or soda can easily be cut and converted to use as a signal, simply follow the same step as making a windshield and it can be used to signal for help!
Next time you’re out and about and find that you are missing a vital piece of equipment, try and be clever! You can always make something useful out of things you wouldn’t expect. On top of that, recycling things and repurposing them is an amazing way to cut costs and do your part in creating a lesser impact on the environment!
